As you all know, teachers start with their work on February. In this time teachers have different workshops, meetings, and time to do some planning. We have a whole month to work on what is best for the students, teachers, parents and the school.

We started our in-service training with a daily conference given by Mr. Norbury, our headmaster. He talked about differentiated education, the IB programme, learning techniques and students needs.

We also had different workshops with the psychology department. Miss Carmen Aranda, Senior psycologist, refreshed and brought new ideas of how to work with our students.

All these conferences and workshops inspired us to continue doing a good job and gave us the opportunity to look at new ideas. This year many things will change, cards are on the table and it is up to us to decide whether we want to be part of the game giving he best we can or not.

I look forward to starting a new year full of adventures and new challenges.

My holidays

After having a wonderful Christmas celebration with my family and a boring New Year's Eve in bed, January came. I had a whole month to do all the things I cannot do during the entire year, and it is because I am working and studying.

I had many plans, I wanted to travel, to study a bit, to go to the beach, and to visit some friends. I had only to recover from a terrible cough, sadly the cure did not come soon. I spent more than two weeks in bed, visited three doctors who diagnosed different problems, and took various medicines that did not make me feel any better so I could not accomplish my plans.

The only thing I could do during my holidays was travelling, I went to the jungle and had a marvellous time there. Thanks God I started to feel better, just in time to go back work. =/

I wish you have had a better holiday than I. I would like to hear some comments when you are back to school. I miss you all.

Solidarity week and Spring Festival

Springs is here!
Flowers are blooming; the Sun is shining; we all feel full of energy; and smile.

For the first time in St. George's College we were participants of an amazing and well-organised Spring Festival. All the school was involved and different competitions took place. Poems were written, plays were performed, speeches were talked and stories were told.

There were class competitions in which teachers, with the help of judges, decided who were the ones selected to go to the finals. When finals took place, students, teachers and judges were more than excited.

We all gathered in the school's patio and the winners were mentioned. They all received a prize and a diploma.

"Solidarity week" also took place. As we all know, the school organises events to help people in need. This week students were allowed to wear casual clothes and money was collected outside and inside the school.

Thanks to these activities we teach our students to be responsible, organised, work as a team and help each other. We expect to develop different skills and to continue working in activities that help students improving their communication and social abilities.

Human Body Exhibition

What a fascinating way to learn how our body works!

There was an amazing exhibition about human body in PLAZA CAMACHO in Surco. This educational experience showed us from cells to complete and real human bodies in exhibition. All the bodies, bones, organs and others were donated and belonged to Asian people. This exhibition has been all around the world and we took this great opportunity to visit it.

Year 6, year 7 and year 8 students were more than attracted by the speech of their guides and the way they were involved in this environment. We were able to learn the way our body works, its functions and how it is structured. The place was divided in different rooms all full of colours and lights. Students were astonished by all they saw.

With no doubt I can say this magnificent display was of great help for students and teachers.

Let's hope we can see more of this well-orgnised and well-presented educational exhibitions soon.

Park of the Imagination

Learning about Physics, Maths and Science may not be an easy thing to do. That is why teachers at St. George's College had to look for interesting, creative and dynamic resources to help their students.

"Parque de la imaginación" in San Miguel, offers a range of activities in which students learn about all these topics mentioned above. We had Year 7 and Year 8 participating in this study visit and they were more than happy to be part of this outdoor activity.

Thanks to "Parque de la imgación"students easily understood how the Earth works and why things happened the way they do in a dynamic and entertaining way. They learnt about gravity, force, energy, nature, and others.

We look forward to visiting this place again!

Year 7 students started to work in pairs in order to create a useful product for their classmates. They had to invent an innovative gadget to be use in class or at school. They came up with very interesting ideas.

At home, they had to prepare adverts and a speech. They use big images, colours and different fonts in their writing. The organization of their adverts was very attractive.

At school, this is what we saw: students became salespersons which was a very interesting experience for them.
Fluency, body language, content, creativeness and accuracy were evaluated.

Casual Day

Casual Day was an excellent opportunity to help people in need.

Patrulla San Jorge collected money inside and outside the school and students brought warming clothes for poor people living in the highlands of Peru. As we all know winter time in aggressive with people in the highlands were the temperature is very low. Adults and children die every year because they have no resources to protect themselves from the cold.

On this day, students left their uniforms at home and attended to school wearing casual clothes to represent that they were here to help giving their clothes to people in need.

This activity taught our students that giving feels better than receiving, that they can make a change helping other, and that spending a little of their time to help is rewarding.

Sports Day

What an amazing way to encourage students to work as a team!!

Four houses were present in this event: Pegasus, Minotaur, Griffin and Fenix.
The crowds were cheering loudly; the participants were doing their best; parents, relatives, students and friends were supporting their teams; and the school was all decorated for the event.

It was a wonderful party the one we got on that day. We had many competitions having students and families involved. We all shared a great time together. We all felt very attached as a big family.

At the end of the day Fenix house won, but we all felt rewarded with this memorable experience.

I found an excellent web site to practise grammar online.
In this ocasion we have 'Used to' or 'use to' vs 'would', I am teaching my students their use, form and function.

Surfing on internet I found the information they just needed. Here a summary with examples and at the end some dynamic online exercises.

'Used to' or 'use to' vs 'would'

1) If we say something used to happen we are talking about repeated events and actions in the past, usually things that happened a long time ago and are now finished.
To express this we can use either used to or would.
· When I was young I used to play with my dolls. = When I was young I would play with my dolls.
Of course I no longer play with dolls!
· We used to go out a lot in the summer. (Implies that we no longer go out much)

2) If you want to talk about repeated states or habits in the past, you must use used to, you cannot use would:
· My dog used to bark at cats.
· I used to smoke.
· I used to be an administrative assistant.
· I used to live in England.
You should use 'use to' without a d in sentences when it follows 'did' or 'didn't' (don't worry too much about this because lots of people get it wrong).

3) The question form is ‘Did you use to…?'. When asking a closed question you put did/didn't in front of the subject followed by use to, you cannot use would.
· Did you use to go out with my sister?
· Did they use to own the company?
· Didn't we use to go to the same school?
Also when asking questions about states in the past you cannot use would.
· What sort of things did you use to like when you were young?

4) In the negative you cannot use would without a change in meaning.
· I didn't use to play with my dolls.
If I said I wouldn't play with my dolls. It would mean I refused to play with my dolls.
· We didn't use to go out much in the winter months.
If I said we wouldn't go out much. It would mean we refused to go out much.
Note - The general rule is when there is did or didn't in the sentence, we say use to (without d) when there is no did or didn't in the sentence, we say used to (with d).

1001 Flat World Tales

In the digital world there is place where stories are created by students of different schools around the planet.

Thanks to the well-known 1001 Flat Tales Project, students around the world have the oppotunity to be authors of very interesting stories. Their schools register in the WIKI and students are asigned a partner.
The objective of this project is to let students publish their stories and let their partners to check it (peer correction work), they will also write comments and will give some suggestions to improve their partner's work. Year 9 students had the opportunity to be involved in this project.

We started a week ago and we are working on our stories. We are very happy to get in touch with people around the world, read their stories and learn a little bit more about their culture.

Happy Birthday St. George!

Today, our school is 77 years old and we are ready for the celebration!
Students and teachers got ready for a RALLEY DAY, we prepared games and performances at school.

Students of junior and senior school decorated their classrooms and participated in different games such as puzzles, dressing the knight, dances and others.

This is the first time St. George's College has a ralley day and we enjoyed it so much that it will take part of our school activities every year.

Classes have just started and a new friend has made his way to our lives.

Russell Ormes comes from England and he is working as a volunteer in our school. He has been visiting a few countries in South America and he will stay with us for a month or so.
He will be working with senior school students and I am sure he will enjoy many of the activities we have at school.

"Reading", a world of unique characters, magic and imagination

During the recess time there is a magical place that opens its doors and happily receive all the students of St. George´s College.

All the ones who are passionated about reading stories, knowing unique characters and imagining a new world of entretainment are welcome to share a special moment with Miss Charito, who is more than glad to have students in the library where she reads interesting books, shows them videos and more.

These activities help our students to have better reading skills; to be more interested about books and educational videos; and to grow in them curiosity and creativeness.

CLASSROOM DEBATES

Students of Senior School had the experience of participating in debates. The topic to dicuss was very interesteing for students and for teachers too. On the picture you can see students of Eight Milton (Year 8) doing the activity.

The topic was: "IS LEARNING ONLINE A GOOD ALTERNATIVE TO HAVE A GOOD EDUCATION AND TO OBTAIN CERTIFICATES?"

In this task students had to organise in 3 groups. One group will be the affirmative team, the other one will be the negative team and we will also have a jury (3 Students) and the Chairperson (Teacher).
The affirmative and negative team had to give 5 strong reasons to back up their opinions regarding the topic given. This was a very interesting task to work with my students. They developed speaking and thinking skills.

They worked as a team, they organised and enjoyed the activity. I strongly recommend to have this activities with your class. =D

Friendship trip

TODAY, 9th of March, all Senior school had a friendship trip where students and teachers had the opportunity to share moments of joy and fun.

We left school at 8:10am and we departed to our destination "Club Molle". Here students and teachers had the opportunity to relax and share special moments. We had all the facilities we needed. We spent our time in the swimming pool, at the playground or just sitting around having somebody to talk to.

At lunch time, we tasted a delicious and tasty roasted chicken and french fries, and as desserts we had ice-creams.
We spent a few more hours playing around and then it was time to leave, we packed our things and left back to school.

This event takes place every year and it is a day to know each other and interact with new friends and teachers.

I hope we all enjoyed this day and let's wait for more events to come!

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION

We all know that two children are not alike, they don't learn the same way, a comfortable environment for one won't be the same for the other one and we can mention many other characteristics that will differentiate our children.

That's is why it is very important to learn about out children and to know how we can improve our children's learning process.

We should include a variety of teaching techniques aimed at reaching students at all levels, involve all students in the lesson, allow that some students will require adjusted expectations and evaluate students based on their individual differences.

At St. George's College teachers are conscious that we can make a difference if we work together and use differentiated instructions when guiding our children.

We are very happy working in this way and we want to thank Pilar Galup, Carmen Aranda, and Rosario Armero for the talk they had with us to refresh a bit what differentiated instruction means and can do for our children.

Closing Ceremony and Xmas at St. George

The end of the school year has come and it is time to say hello to a new year, new aims, new achievements and even new friends and teachers.
The closing ceremony of middle sixth graders took place in December 19th of 2008, and this event represented the beginning of a new stage in the lives of our dear students. This was the start of their secondary school with new goals and expectations. This year two grades became one, representing the strong friendship that they have grown together and showing that all together can achieve many things.
We just wish our students to remain being friends and to achieve all their goals successfully.

An Overview of PET Speaking

Format: 4 parts

Usually, candidates are tested in pairs. Where there is an uneven number of candidates, the final Speaking test is a group of three rather than a pair. The group of three is not an option for all candidates, but only used for the last interview, where necessary.

There will always be two examiners. One examiner acts as both assessor and interlocutor and manages the interaction by asking questions and setting up the tasks. The other acts as assessor and doesn't join in the conversation.

Timing: 10-12 minutes. The group of three test takes 13-15 minutes.

Marks: 25 marks available which represents 25% of the total score for the whole exam.

WE WON TULUMAYOS!!

Yesterday we had a memorable FESTIDANZA at school, all students of Saint George College performed traditional dances of Peru. They were dressed and ready to show us how well they trained these past days.

We also had a BINGO and many lucky ones got a prize!

Middle Sixth grades B performed their dance of TULUMAYOS and they won, CONGRATULATIONS! You did it very well!

PET - READING AND WRITING DOs and DON'Ts

Make sure you know all the task types by looking at practice tests.

Make sure you do lots of general reading practice in class and at home, especially the kinds of texts used in the PET test.

Keep a vocabulary notebook to write down new words and make notes about how to use the word.

Read all the instructions carefully and look at any examples.

Make sure that you can skim and scan.

Check your answers and make sure you have written them in the correct place on the answer sheet.

Make sure that your handwriting is clear and easy to read.

Read each text before attempting to answer the questions.

Don't leave answers blank, even if you aren't sure of the answer.
Don't use a pen on the answer sheets.

Don't worry if there is a word you don't know. Try to guess its meaning.

Don't write a full, rough copy of Writing Part 2 and 3. Just write quick notes to plan your answer.

Don't worry too much about making grammatical errors in Writing Parts 2 and 3. Communicating is the important thing.

Last night we experienced the magic of the theatre, having Matter Admirabilis School with San Charbel School, Lord Byron and St. George's College performing on stage.

The three plays were performed wonderfully and at the end of the night 3 prizes were given. St. George's College won two of them. "Best Play" and "Best Male Actor".

We want to congratulate all the ones who were participant in this event; and to encourage schools to continue doing theater which is a great way to involve our students in the second language.

YOUTH DAY

Middle and Upper students welcome this day by reflecting the importance of being teenagers; listing great things can they achieve; remembering their rights and obligations, and finding different reasons to celebrate this day.

We wanted to celebrate this day by having a casual day and a shared lunch.
All students from Middle to Upper gathered at 1:00pm at the school's yard and sat at the tables which were arranged for the students and teachers.

After the delicious lunch, we had a "baileton", teachers and students danced different rhythms, took pictures and enjoyed the day.

We just want to tell students of St. George the great human beings they are, and to keep working hard. They are in a very special stage in their lives and they have to take advantage of that. KEEP IT UP GUYS!

VISITORS AT SAINT GEORGE

Last Friday Alan´s mum and niece came to school.
Alan has been working as a volunteer for over 6 months now and it was very special for us to know that his family was coming to Peru.

Chloe, Alan´s niece, shared with us a Power Point Presentation that she made especially for us and she told us a bit about her life in Scotland. Sixth graders also shared what they did during their holidays. We really enjoyed having a time with them and we loved the sweets they brought from Scotland. THANK YOU VERY NICE!

I know they spent a week in Arequipa visiting the city and surrounders; and as they told us they had a wonderful time there.

They left on Saturday and we hope they have enjoyed their staying here in Peru. It was very nice to meet them. Thanks for coming!

SUMERIAN WRITING

Sumerian is the first known written language. Its script, called cuneiform, meaning "wedge-shaped".

The Cuneiform script is one of the earliest known forms of written expression. Created by the Sumerians in the late 4th millennium BC, cuneiform writing began as a system of pictographs. Over time, the pictorial representations became simplified and more abstract.

Cuneiforms were written on clay tablets, on which symbols were drawn with a reed. The impressions left were wedge shaped, thus giving rise to the name cuneiform, wedge-writing.The Sumerian script was adapted for the writing of the Akkadian, Elamite, Hittite, Assyrian, and Luwian languages, and inspired the Old Persian and Ugaritic national alphabets.

It was widely used in Mesopotamia for about 3000 years, though the syllabic nature of the script as it was refined by the Sumerians was unintuitive to the Semitic speakers.

Students of Middle Sixth are learning about this and they are also investigating about writing in other countries. Check what they found!

Preliminary English Test (PET)

PET is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an intermediate level. It covers all four language skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking. Preparing for the exam is a popular way to develop and improve your language skills because it provides practical language practice in a variety of everyday work, study and leisure situations.
PET reflects the use of language in real life, such as understanding signs and announcements, and is accepted by many employers as proof of ability to use English in clerical, secretarial or managerial jobs. It is also widely accepted for use in jobs where spoken English is necessary such as tourism, retail, construction, manufacturing and engineering.

a PET certificate is valid for life. You will not need to take the exam again PET is a truly international certificate, recognised around the world for business and study purposes thousands of employers, universities and government departments officially recognise PET as an intermediate qualification in English although PET is a basic exam, it offers a chance to find out your strengths and weaknesses in using English, and gives you a pathway to higher qualifications such as the First Certificate in English (FCE)

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

For working parents, childcare during the holidays can be a problem. Many families get a hand from grandparents and other relatives, while others arrange holiday childcare or book children in for summer activity programmes.
You may want to think about finding a childminder or looking at other childcare options for the holidays.

Here you have some ideas to involve your children in. Some ideas for children's outings are museums and galleries have on-going activities for children and during the holidays many run special events or programmes.

Days out at the beach, in the country, or visiting heritage sites, can be affordable and enjoyable for both adults and children. Trips to amusement parks and adventure playgrounds could be another option to consider during the holidays.
Just organize a schedule and let your children to enjoy their holidays.

SOLIDARITY WEEK AT ST. GEORGE

This week St. George College is organizing a "Solidarity Week". Its aim is to raise funds to build schools in the South of Peru after a terrible earthquake hit the area.

This project started on Wednesday and this day was called "Jeans Day", all the members of the school, including administrative staff, teacher and students put on their best jeans and showed them off on this day.

Today (Thursday) we had the "Extravagant Day" and we were allowed to wear whatever we wanted to. Amazing clothing designs came out and all the students dressed up with a unique combination of colours and accesories.

Tomorrow we are having a "Hat Day", and we will choose a winner. The best hat will have a prize!

Now I leave you with some of the pictures I took this week and remember that all this is for a noble cause... THE SOUTH OF PERU NEEDS US!!!

SIXTH GRADERS PRESENTATION ABOUT MASTER HOUSES

Students of Middle Sixth and Middle First had an investigation work about the characters of their "master houses". They had to look for information about the characters´ lives, work, family, etc.

Our houses are "William Shakespeare", "Winston Churchill", "Florence Nightingale" and "Queen Vistoria".

This is one of the power point presentations that sixth graders presented and had as a visual aid for their speech.

SPORTS DAY AT ST. GEORGE

On this very special day students, teachers and parents enjoyed of the Sports Day and had members of their houses playing football, volley, basketball and many other sports.

We were all in a big competition to obtain points for our houses and be winners!

We also celebrated a very special day... FATHER´S DAY! AND fathers were able to play a little bit of football and mum played volley.

At the end of the Sports Day Churchill house won; we want to congratulate all the members of the team and tell them to be prepared next year as we will do our best to win.

SIXTH GRADERS USING THE SMART BOARD

We were learning about continents and oceans and using the smart board was a fantastic way of getting students involved with the class, they love interating with technology and making use of it.

Students had to put the continents is order and to write the name of the oceans in the correct location.

Students also learnt, in details, about South America and the countries that form this continent. They labeled the shapes of the countries and wrote down the name of their capitals.

MIDDLE SIXTH STUDENTS BECOME STORYTELLERS

Following to the successful Megan Hicks` storytelling students from Middle Sixth were motivated to become storytellers for one day.

They looked on the Internet how to create more orginami shapes, and they got ready for their performances. Students had to practice folding and folding pieces of paper and they also had to create or adapt stories until they were ready.

The final day came, and this is one of the great performances we experienced on that day...

On Thrusday 22nd Students of St. George College had a magic day with Megan Hick an excellent story teller of England.

On this day students gathered to listen attentively to her stories. She made us smile and laugh and she taught us how to create beautiful origami shapes.

Students were very happy with this experience and they would like to have more story tellers to come to St. George.

A DAY TO SHARE

First Term is over at Saint George College, and students from Middle Sixth decided to celebrated by invited their teachers to share lunch with them. We used the garden next to one of the classroom and joined together to share snacks and drinks.

MOTHER`S DAY AT ST. GEORGE COLLEGE

On this very special day students of Middle School prepared a special celebration for their mums. They decorated the classrooms, memorized poems, plays and songs. They also wrote poems and letters for their mums.

From 8:00am to 9:00am mothers were invited to the school and together we had a marvellous day. Thank you very much my dear students, you did and excellent work and put all their effort for this to be a success. THANK YOU!

FIELD TRIP - Coast Wetlands

Students from Middle Sixth A and B had a field trip to the wetlands in Lima, they visited Pucusana, Salinas de Chilca and Puerto Viejo. This trip involved many disciplines such as Geography, Science, Spanish and Maths.

Students were able to see different species of birds and plants in those areas and to understand the value of preserving them.
In this trip students had a guide who was giving them lots of information and they were very motivated by the view and the experience of being there.

We all had a very good time!

PET EXAMINATIONS

It is very important for students in Middle First to get familiar with PET Examinations as they will be taking the exam at the end of this year. They will have mock exams every bimester and they will practice with their books and worksheets, also we have Alan Bruce, he is from Scotland and he is a great help.

Am I a good story teller?
1. Observe the children during the telling. Adjust and make clarifications as needed.
2. Encourage interaction and participation.
3. Modify the pace and lenght to match the experiental and development level of the children.
4. Use voice variations, facial expressions, gestures, and repetitive phrases to draw the young listeners into the story.
5. Use appropiate words and descriptions that help children imagine the happenings.
6. Stimutale the listener´s five senses while telling the story without over stimulating.
7. Identify the truths of the story and relate it to the child´s life.
8. Refrain from using props during the story that detract from the child´s abiliy to stay with the story line.

Wiki is a collaborative environment where students learn much about how to work with others, how to create,communicate and how to work in a world where the creation of knowledge and information is more and more becoming a group effort. They can also be used to facilitate the dissemination of information, to enable the exchange of ideas and to facilitate group interaction.
The more autonomy teachers give students the better but a teacher must be willing to do this. It means students begin to teach each other and the teacher becomes a facilitator.
Students learn to publish content, develop and use collaborative skills, negotiating to agree on correctness meaning relevance, and more.
First see if something is already written, read critically to find the areas where information is missing or disorganized.
Must take it on as your own because you have the ability to edit and make it better. This is a hugh shift.
Give students editorial control, Have the whole class monitor the content gives students ownership and responsibility.

We had a great time with the students who are leaving the school this year.

Why take FCE?

FCE is ideal if you want to work or study abroad or to develop a career which requires language skills.

FCE is a useful preparation if you are working towards higher level exams, such as CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) and CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English).

On passing the exam you will receive a certificate awarded by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, which is recognised by universities and employers throughout the world.

You will also receive a statement of results, showing how you performed in each of the five papers.

WHAT DOES THE EXAM INVOLVE?

FCE has five papers:

Reading, Writing, Use of English, Listening and Speaking.

Each of the written papers is returned to Cambridge for marking and assessment. The Speaking Test is conducted by two locally based examiners who examine you face to face. All examiners are accredited by Cambridge ESOL.
